The US Air Force is sending its newest F-35 fighter jets to Russia's doorstep as part of a program set up after Russia annexed Crimea from the Ukraine in 2014, a US official tells CNN.

It's just two jets, and they are there to train with other US and allied assets.

F-35 brings an interesting wrinkle to joint operations as it has such dominance on RF, electro-optical, and IR spectrum it functions well as a quarterback to improve operations of existing 4th gen assets, they could probably just fly it along the border to soak up intel on Russian integrated air defense systems.

However deploying two is hardly some statement of deterrence.
