UN Golan Heights mission in doubt as EU lifts Syria arms embargo

:Austria threatens to withdraw peacekeepers from Israeli-occupied Syrian territory if Britain helps arm anti-Assad rebelsThe future of the long-running UN peacekeeping mission on the strategic Golan Heights between Syria and Israel has been thrown into question as a result of Britain's decision to defy most of the EU and force the lifting on the two-year arms embargo on Syria. The Austrian chancellor, Werner Faymann, and vice-chancellor, Michael Spindelegger, said on Tuesday they would probably pull out more than 300 peacekeepers if Britain helped arm the rebellion against Bashar al-Assad's regime." UN Golan Heights mission in doubt as EU lifts Syria arms embargo. There are consequences to warmongering. That is the lesson I get out of this news story. Sherri

Two years ago ---at the commencement of the "arab spring" -----lots of
people were ECSTATIC -----the word of the mob was ----"THE ARABS
WILL GET THE BOOT OF OPPRESSIVE DICTATORS OFF THEIR NECKS"
Based on history-----I saw it as the onset of a really BLOODY MESS that
would spread thruout the islamic world ----something like a TSUNAMMI OF
VIOLENCE Of the dictators of the world----the ASSADS have proved
themselves ---no slouches. Ex-pat syrians in the US----for DECADES---
have been fearful of voicing any criticism of Papa Assad and ---later on
of baby ASSAD. ----quite reminiscent of the attitude I noted in HAITIANS--
regarding Papa doc Duvalier ---and baby doc Duvalier.

In this "arab spring"-----lots of heads have rolled -----in fact some of the
best. I noted the dethronement of SALEH with some regret----he did
the best he could and Yemen is now deteriorating into barbaric tribal
brutality---the country now a haven and training ground for
Al Queida. Mubarak----another loss----as much as my coptic colleagues
despise him ----he was probably the best of the messy lot. Poor
Musharraf is in JAIL------virtually an idealist who devoted his life to the
welfare of pakistan. I find it fascinating that ANYONE regrets the
downfall of the murdering assads -----kinda like crying at Stalin's.
funeral.

That Great Britain has come out in FAVOR of getting rid of
Assad-----two years ago would have been a VOTE OF CONFIDENCE
in the "wisdom" of the great and glorious "arab spring" He is
certainly the most deserving of being "gotten rid of". HOWEVER--
the EU did get something right this time----arming the rebels is
going to create LOTS MORE BLOODSHED----and put the christians
of syria at even greater risk than they are now. As vile as is Assad
and his Hezbollah cronies----the islamicists who will likely step into
the power vacuum-----will probably be even worse. Arming the
rebels is as stupid as was arming the taliban
