a few years ago a map credited to ancient Nordic sailors was attempted to be passed off as original..it was in the possession of a Catholic Bishop... if my memory serves me...as it turned out it was a fake(Fraud) :dunno:

yes i can understand your concerns when there were cases of manipulation.

This map was lost and refound in 1920s in Topkapi Palace Museum which is 700.000 m² in Istanbul , which was former Ottoman resident and now functioning as a Museum.

There is much of the Ottoman state treasury presented.
Here is a University page about Topkapi Palace showing the treasury and the map.

This map is part of 2 maps. And it Shows the West of Northern America and South America + Antarctis. The left part of the map.

And it shows Antarctic with Ice-uncovered geography.

In 1511, the story goes on, Piri Reis began to draw a new map of the world which was to incorporate all of the recent Spanish and Portuguese discoveries. To do so, he used about 20 source maps. Among them, he wrote, were eight maps of the world done in the time of Alexander the Great (the fourth century B.C.), an Arab map of India, four Portuguese maps of the Indian Ocean and China, and his uncle Kemal's bequest, "a map drawn by Colombo in the western region." He did not, however, say what the other six source maps were.

This not a official link but here you find a letter of an USAF commander:

Subject: Admiral Piri Reis Map

Dear Professor Hapgood,
Your request of evaluation of certain unusual features of the Piri Reis map of 1513 by this organization has been reviewed.
The claim that the lower part of the map portrays the Princess Martha Coast of Queen Maud Land, Antarctic, and the Palmer Peninsular, is reasonable. We find that this is the most logical and in all probability the correct interpretation of the map.
The geographical detail shown in the lower part of the map agrees very remarkably with the results of the seismic profile made across the top of the ice-cap by the Swedish-British Antarctic Expedition of 1949.
This indicates the coastline had been mapped before it was covered by the ice-cap.
The ice-cap in this region is now about a mile thick.
We have no idea how the data on this map can be reconciled with the supposed state of geographical knowledge in 1513.

Harold Z. Ohlmeyer Lt. Colonel, USAF Commander

Since the "Ice Age" preceeded Alexander the Great and the 1500 date cited...I seriously believe this to be a fake compostion...a one mile deep ice cap would surely take longer than 400 years or for that matter 2000years!
