The Big-Freeze: Thousands trapped in Europe as death toll rises to 600 « JoNova: Science, carbon, climate and tax

And who wants Global Warming when you can face avalanches, deep snow, and record cold? How much fun can you have with 2 meters of snow on your house, and none of that evil coal powered electricity? What’s happening in Europe and Russia over the last two weeks is not just your average cold-snap. Temperatures reached -28C in Moscow. One point in Russia hit -52.8C (-68F) on Monday. MOSCOW — Some 215 Russians have died this year in a prolonged period of abnormally cold winter weather, the health ministry said Monday as the overall death toll for Europe rose to well over...

But, in march 2000 they were saying

Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past - Environment - The Independent

However, the warming is so far manifesting itself more in winters which are less cold than in much hotter summers. According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event".

"Children just aren't going to know what snow is," he said.

The effects of snow-free winter in Britain are already becoming apparent. This year, for the first time ever, Hamleys, Britain's biggest toyshop, had no sledges on display in its Regent Street store. "It was a bit of a first," a spokesperson said.

In Britain they are blaming it on fuel poverty. The elderly are dropping like flies from hypothermia.

All for green. Oh well eco whackos are no doubt thrilled with the reduction in population.

Like hell going with green takes costs down.

Meanwhile over the same period the price of gas has gone up by 40% while electricity now costs 21% more.

Age UK says the number of older people living in fuel poverty has tripled since 2003, now representing three million people, or a quarter of all pensioners.

Hypothermia deaths double over five years - Telegraph

Check out this part.

The hypothermia figures come as the parent companies of Britain’s six big energy firms are expected to announce total profits of £15 billion in the next few weeks.

2003, 35,000+ dead in Europe from a heat wave. In the drought and heat wave in Russia in 2010, that many dead in a week.

Yes, a very severe winter in Europe, and a very mild winter in the US.

Wider and wilder swings with an overall warming.

Shit. Shows what good a lower standard of living can do to a nation not prepared for severe cold. -28C? We call that a cold day in WI, but I've walked a mile to work in weather colder than that.

I guess this year we're hoarding all the heat that they should be getting to keep their weather normal. No I don't believe the climate is a zero sum game either.

Before capitalism, cold weather killed far more people than warmer weather. The main killer was famine caused by late springs and early winters, not hypothermia. Famine can largely be alleviated now in the West because we have an excess of money to buy food with. However, that isn't true of parts of the world like China and Africa.

Heard from one of my volunteer translators in Romania, yesterday.

She tells me things are bad there, very bad.

Of course Romania's been a bit of a mess for quite some time, so the cold snap is just more misery piled on.

Before Capitalism? Hahahahaha. Wrong. Before the Industrial Revolution and the age of oil. Capitalism didn't do it.

Capitalism is what caused the Industrial Revolution, you stupid git. That's what ended famines and starvation. If you disagree, then produce evidence of starvation in any industrial country.

Even if your characterization where correct, how does that prove global warming?

Are you claiming CO2 was causing the earth to warm in the 1850s?
