The amount of data we gathered today from the study of 25 minutes worth of a tornado will not only save hundreds if not thousands of lives, but help us understand tornadoes better with the largest gathering of meteorlogical scientists and mobile doppler radars EVER. If there never was any proof of the existence of God - today there was proof.

If you ever saw the movie Twister it was loosely based off of the VORTEX project.

VORTEX projects - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's been a very depressing month of missed opportunities and a very quiet severe weather season. VORTEX 2 had yet, up until today, find a tornado. The fear was once it did find a tornado, it would appear so quickly, only be on the ground for maybe a minute or two that very little data would be available - so they wanted to study as many tornadoes as possible to get as much data as possible from short lived tornadoes.

Today - God came through for tornado science. The greatest video we've ever seen of tornadoes happened today. A BEAUTIFUL quarter mile wide rain-wrapped tornado appeared in a MASSIVE open field with no civilization or structure in the way at all. No damage, no lives lost... and 25 minutes - I repeat 25 minutes that VORTEX 2 followed and gathered more data in the past 25 minutes than we've ever gained before in tornado science.

This is the greatest video of tornadoes that we've ever seen. Why? Because some of the cool air from the thunderstorm tries to choke off the tornado and sort of flips the inside of the tornado towards the cameras... so you see INSIDE the parent funnel of the vortex and you seen INSIDE the tornado in the more rapidly rotating vortex.

To put this in short, the best case scenario for VORTEX2 couldn't have come close to what happened today making today the best day in tornado science HISTORY.

Awesome find David, that was fascinating!

Although I find it unfortunate that such a red letter day in meteorology when a 'Vortex2' search of Google News only produces two blogs entry as tribute to these scientists triumphant success.

This is our taxpayer dollars hard at work, folks. The best and the brightest minds of the country getting together, anaylzing and capturing data on storms and tornadoes that can save hundreds if not thousands of lives each year. This is a great time to be a weather nerd.
