Ballot Access News - Texas Secessionists Trying to Use Obscure Procedure to Get their Idea on Republican Primary Ballot

Texas does not have the statewide initiative. But it does have an obscure procedure in its election code for a group to petition for a statewide measure in a party primary. The procedure has existed since 1907, but apparently has never been used...

The leadership of the Republican Party does not support the idea of secession for Texas and will probably try to prevent the question from appearing on the party’s primary ballot if it can. Thanks to XXXXX for the link and to XXXXXX for explaining the Texas law, which is in sections 172.087 and 172.088.

Nationalist Group Wants TX Secession on Primary Ballot | The Texas Tribune

The Nederland-based Texas independence group is circulating a petition aimed at getting a non-binding vote onto the GOP primary ballot over whether "the state of Texas should reassert its status as an independent nation."

Their goal? 75,000 signatures from registered voters by Dec. 1 — more than the 66,894 the Texas Secretary of State's office says the group needs to get the language on the ballot.

Even if the Texas Nationalist Movement gets enough signatures, such a vote would be little more than symbolic. Academics agree that Texas cannot secede from the United States, and point to a post-Civil War Supreme Court ruling, Texas v. White, as evidence.

But that hasn't stopped the Republican Party of Texas from rolling its eyes at the secessionists. Texas GOP communications director Aaron Whitehead said the Republican party certainly doesn't welcome outside groups trying to doctor the party ballot.

“Historically the executive committee of the Republican Party has chosen what goes on this,” Whitehead said, “and it’s party preference that it stays that way.”

The Texas Nationalist Movement, which hasn't yet verified how many signatures it has, doesn't buy the argument that the state can't secede. Daniel Miller, the group's president, points to the state Constitution, and in particular, the provision that gives Texans the right to "alter, reform or abolish their government in such manner as they may think expedient.”

So what's the problem? They're using the system in place to get their ideas out there. If their ideas aren't welcome by Texas, they won't get the thumbs up vote.

Don't like it, change the system.

Let's avoid the Christmas rush and just dissolve the Union.

Why is it "wacky?" You don't like most of the ideas and culture that come out of Texas anyway. Wouldn't you be happier to let them go?

Use the tactic no matter how obscure. Alaska has never been happy about being joined to the lower 48 and have continued their succession efforts to this day. I hope Texas pulls it off and can show Alaska how it get it done. Then we can all move to either state and escape this madness.

If they were actually secede, which they won't, we would still have to support them. Instead of calling it welfare, we'd call it "foreign aid" and they'd clean up.

How do you know what I do and don't like out of Texas?

I've said it before, when the Repubs opened the asylum doors half went to California, the other half to Texas......... Both states tend towards the insane in opposite directions.

Penguins joined the protest on a number of Russian social media websites. Their signs read: "Crimea is ours," and "Alaska is Next" and "Only Putin."

Having met Daniel Miller, I think he is as insane on secession as Keys and Sil on homosexuality.

Putin would probably love that even more than a gay Sec. of the Army.

Will it go anywhere? Probably not even if the majority approves but remember this

"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."
