Read today in the WSJ opinion page that Texas can divide into up to five states and it already has congressional approval (approved upon annexation).

So, come on, Texas! Let's get four more Republican states set up. Take one for the team!

Is Myth. Texas cannot divide. To cut up perfection would be wrong anyway.

How would dividing Texas into four states help Republicans at all? The electorial votes and the representation would be the same because the population hasnt changed. Whats the point.

I would also point out some parts of texas are Democrat. If we have one state we just need to carry one state to carry the same ammount of votes as it would if we had four states in its place. With four states there is more of a chance that the votes could be different. I like Texas as it is anyway.

Four more states would add eight more electoral college votes (2 senators per state).

Ah i suppose that would be true. I dont think that will sway this election much anyway. but 6 new senators might be nice in the senate to get some stuff passed.

Texas CAN split. It was part of the agreement for annexation. Just as was the agreement that the Federal government owns NO land in Texas (even Ft. Hood is leased). I've also heard that the Treaty of Hidalgo that ended the US-Mexican War had a clause that allowed for Texas to determine their own fate and therefore, Texas can stay in the Union or secede at their desire. But I have not been able to confirm this yet. If I do, I will past a link.

I've always heard that the reason Texas never split up, was that nobody wanted to give up the Alamo.

Joint Resolution for Annexing Texas to the United States - Approved March 1, 1845

Texas PLUS four other states of equal size. That would be 10 senators plus the same number of congressmen as now of course.
