Taiwan should be VERY afraid

They should not count on the Biden Administration to protect them from China.

Actually, here's why Taiwan should be afraid.

Legally, China would be well within their rights to assert their authority over it.

Taiwan is recognized internationally as a province of China. It's not recognized as an independent country.

So a war between China and Taiwan would be an internal affair.

Here's the more important question. Are you willing to sacrifice someone you care about to protect Taiwan from China?

I'm not.

Not my circus, not my monkeys.

Taiwan has been building up China's economy for decades to make a quick buck. Or Rembibi.. or whatever.
Imagine that--you think it ok for CHINA to come in and just take a people who don't want CHINA to own them.

The whole "one china" policy is a vestige of the cold war. Nothing more.

I agree, it is.. But now we are stuck with it.

Taiwan is tolerated as an independent entity because it's a conduit for western/Japanese investment into China. But China won't tolerate an outright violation of it's sovereign rights.

Red China isn't a sovereign country, because they abuse their people. No freedom allowed there.

Just like Germany and the Soviet Union weren't when they killed their people.

Well the 10% will be executed, and yes life would change for the 90% because they don't want to be ruled by the ChiComms.

And the whole "no diplomatic relations" thing is nothing but doublethink.

Nope. It's a reality. Taiwan won't call itself an independent country because the Chinese would immediately invade.

Why would they do that? That kind of human rights violation wouldn't be tolerated, and Red China's economy would collapse.

When was the last time the ChiComms pulled off a successful amphibious invasion?

Who would say they had to.

Launch a air assault, take a major airfield or two, fly the rest in.

Taiwan's air force and air defenses would decimate that.

And we would be drawn into it, probably the Japanese and the South Koreans as well, despite your desire for ChimComm world hegemony.

Only if we are stupid.

From the Taiwan relations act:

The act further stipulates that the United States will "consider any effort to determine the future of Taiwan by other than peaceful means, including by boycotts or embargoes, a threat to the peace and security of the Western Pacific area and of grave concern to the United States".

Uh, those people speak Chinese and call themselves "The Republic of China"... so they aren't doing a very good job of it.
"Those people" have been calling themselves taiwanese--------and rebelling against the Chinese control...

Taiwan doesn't want to be owned by the chinese....

Wouldn't be tolerated by who? You ask any American mother if she wants to send her son off to die for Taiwan... my guess is you won't get many takers.

American mothers didn't want to send their sons off to fight Japan and Germany either in the 1940's.

And in times past, Persian moms didn't want to send their sons off to Greece and Roman moms didn't want their boys sent to Carthage.

Asking mom, she'll always object.

Vietnam is on Taiwans side. They'll kick the shit out of China just like they dis US'unz

In all fairness (not that Dems are fair), both Dems & Pubs have worried about what to do if China demands that Taiwan surrender.

I assume that both Dem & Pub administrations have counted on China to restrain itself regarding Taiwan.

Chances are that most Americans (although applauding Taiwan's democracy) do not want American forces getting into a hot war with China over Taiwan.

In plain English, if China attacks Taiwan, that island democracy is a dead duck.

I guess that Taiwanese officials are discussing whether resistance would only result in the needless death of many young soldiers.

To the best of our knowledge, this country has never sent a secret message to Beijing that the United States will defend Taiwan. So China probably feels that it can do whatever it wants.

After all, Russia stole part of Ukraine, and the world did nothing.

That's how the cookie crumbles in the world.

(I hope that President Biden can secure a cease-fire so that some Taiwanese can find refuge in sympathetic countries.)

Taiwan has been sitting 90 miles off the coast of Communist led China for 70 years.
While China is capable of bombing the crap out of Taiwan, an invasion is another story. Unlike D Day in WWII, there would be no surprise. The thousands of landing craft would be vulnerable to attacks from the air, anti-ship missiles and submarines.

More importantly, the economic backlash against China would be crippling. Why would it be worth it?

The Chinese don't have to invade. They can use their navy to embargo all trade. They can also declare a no-fly zone. Taiwan would be forced to capitulate.

Doing either would force other countries to intercede.

Nah. The Chinese are adept at buying and blackmailing world officials. Take the WHO, for instance.

Taiwan needs to develop nukes - and fast!
