DETROIT - State education officials have ordered the emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools to immediately implement a plan that balances the district's books by closing half its schools.

The Detroit News says the financial restructuring plan will increase high school class sizes to 60 students and consolidate operations.

Imagine teaching a high school class of 60 students. Good luck with that.
60 students, most of whom don't want to be there in the first place.

Yep. I've taught college classes with 120 students and nobody acted up because they were paying for the class. If they didn't want to be there, they just left. That's the problem with giving something away for free.

Last week, state Sen. Phil Pavlov, R-St. Clair Township, proposed a bill that would give the emergency financial manager the power to cancel government or teacher union contracts. DPS spends nearly two-thirds of its budget on personnel costs, or $677 million a year.

State Rep. Paul Scott, R-Grand Blanc, chairman of the joint House and Senate Education Committee, said there are concerns about the state taking on the district's liability.

"I don't feel the taxpayers of Michigan are willing to become liable for that money with all the structural and institutional problems that exist," Scott said.

"We need a long-term solution for public schools for Detroit and the state," he said. "We just don't have the solution right now."

Detroit is no better than Fallujah or Baghdad at this point. The Democrats destroyed that once great City a long time ago. There is no hope for Detroit at this point. They will be a Third World Wasteland for the foreseeable future. But hey, keep on voting Democrat Detroit. It's working out great for you guys. Yikes! :(
