In bemoaning the state of education today, a few salient points should be kept in mind.

In comparing national standards, it should be remembered that education in America is far more inclusive and democratic (not to mention republican) than in most countries.

A large and growing number of students in American public schools are new arrivals from other countries where they may have, for a number of reasons, missed a number (sometimes a shocking number) of years of formal education. Overcoming these gaps in formal education is a huge challenge. This is to say nothing of the obvious challenge of engaging academic material in a second or third language. If you think that's easy, give it a try.

Then there is the very real matter of previous and/or on-going trauma in the lives of students from war-torn countries or war-like inner city environments. such negative influences can greatly impede the learning process in many ways. Add in the left's zealous mission over the past 40 years to destroy the nuclear family, and you've got a panoply of persistent problems to prevail against.

And for all that, scores and scores of people from all over the world (no, not just the third world) flock to our shores each year to enroll in our schools (yes, even the public ones).

yep , these imports are messing up normal American kids lives and education 'dripper' !!

Private schools or homeschooling, any parent with a lick of common sense knows this

Leaving aside your misuse of "normal"...

Not "messing up," just facts that need to be taken into consideration.

Lots of parents have plenty of common sense, but cannot afford private school or homeschooling. Lots of public schools are excellent, and not a few private schools suck. Too many generalizations.

Send your children to public schools at your and their peril. Ours attend private schools and the education they are receiving is worth every nickel of tuition

You haven't defined "normal" as you imagine it, and you are unqualified to call anyone "substandard."

Over-generalization.

No it's not. Simply because you "define" something doesn't make it so. There are too many distractions in public education, too many social issues and children are not learning what they need to be learning. Two of our daughters debate and they debate at meets where there are public school students, home schooled students and private school students, in nearly every instance the private schooled and homeschooled students are blowing away the public schooled students. Why? I see why, homeschooled and private are better aware of the issue and topic, they come better prepared, they've done their legwork and homework. You can watch them before the debates, the private and home school are going over notes, conferring with each other and their coaches and then look over at the public schooled and they are cutting up, dancing around, etc....then when the rubber meets the road they are not prepared and lose. Public education is a hot mess

Yes it is:

2016 Best Public High Schools in America

There are many public schools in America that are better than a lot of private ones. For obvious reasons.

I'll put ours up against anyone. Honor students in one of the best private schools in the state. I know how bad public education is

Kids in private schools are still kids, with their own distractions and social issues. Private school does not mean little robots who are not growing up.

Meh, I'll send ours to private school where they run laps around public school kids. It's not even close

You are wearing blinders like a milk-horse. There are lots of private schools that are just money mills. Not all, not most, but many.

Many private schools are excellent. World-class. But you don't know how good public education can be (but of course isn't always).

It's a personal choice to be decided by parents, we as parents have chosen what we feel is best for ours and it's paying wonderful dividends

No one is denying you you your choice. Not all parents (in practical terms) have one.

I relaize that and it's one reason we don't want ours in public schools.....those distractions
