Anyone care to take a shot at how this song got its name?

Very good! That is exactly right.
 

It means they wrote a crazy song while on LSD and
for some reason it caught on.


Actually, it wasn't the writing, the original writing was "in the Garden of Eden". But, because they were stoned and drunk when they recorded it, instead of being "in the Garden of Eden", it came out "ina godda da vida". And, because the band liked the way it sounded, they released it that way.
