"ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The first of two units to be shut down at a coal-fired power plant that has been serving customers throughout the American Southwest for decades is no longer in operation, officials with New Mexico’s largest utility said Tuesday....

...“It’s our job to make sure the lights don’t flicker. We have a plan in place,” said Gerard Ortiz, vice president of regulatory affairs for the utility’s parent company, PNM Resources. “It will be just another day in December, but it’s a milestone for the state really.”

The closure comes as utilities around the U.S. are trying to shed coal-fired electricity generation from their portfolios, filling the void with less expensive natural gas and renewable sources such as wind and solar"

This is a change, not so much mandated by the people but purely done to reduce costs thus increasing profits. The corporations have always given lip service to cleaner air but until solar and wind power, it wasn't a cost effective venture.

The transition will be slow, decades even, but it is inevitable.

Only legacy legislation is keeping solar and wind in the mix. Solar has no payback period both because cost per kilo-watt is going down and also the premier location for solar panels is in space with launch costs also decreasing solar always goes obsolete prior to building. Wind power is an environmental disaster. NG on the other hand is cheap and getting cheaper,

We already published a great article from Nexus Media regarding Lazard’s new reportshowing the extremely low (and falling) costs of solar power and wind power. However, I’ve been wanting to highlight these awesome new findings since Larmionshared the updated report with us earlier this month, and I want to break out the amazing news in 5 specific ways.

These are 5 messages that I think anyone wanting a better US economy (or a better economy in practically any country), anyone wanting national energy freedom (aka energy independence), anyone wanting to advance the most cost-effective choices for electricity generation, and anyone wanting to make logical energy decisions should know and share with others.

1. Wind & Solar Are Cheaper (Without Subsidies) Than Dirty Energy
The first point is the very basic fact that new wind power and/or solar power plants are typically cheaper than new coal, natural gas, or nuclear power plants — even without any governmental support for solar or wind.

Not only are they typically cheaper — they’re much cheaper in many cases.

And the price of solar and wind continues to decline.
