Newton was wrong: Scientists dismiss Newton's theory of gravity and warn Einstein is next

ISAAC NEWTON is rightly regarded as the greatest scientist of all time. However, groundbreaking black hole research has now disproved Newton’s theory of gravity – and even Albert Einstein’s theories are “starting to fray around the edges”, a scientist has warned.

Now, one theorist has provoked controversy with a devastatingly simple explanation for why dark matter still hasn’t been found: it doesn’t exist.

But that’s not the only reason Prof Erik Verlinde of the University of Amsterdam is attracting so much attention. After all, others have previously suggested dark matter may be some kind of illusion.

What sets Verlinde apart is his explanation for the source of the illusion. He believes it’s the result of nothing less than a fundamental misconception about the most familiar force in the Universe: gravity.

It’s a claim that brings Verlinde up against the work of some of the greatest minds in science – including Albert Einstein, whose celebrated theory of gravity is one of the cornerstones of modern physics. Known as General Relativity, it has led to a host of triumphs, including the detection in 2015 of gravitational waves– ripples in the fabric of space-time caused by the collision of two black holes.

The truth about gravity
Verlinde has spent years piecing together clues from theory and observation to create a whole new vision of the force we call gravity. Now his ideas are being put to the test, with intriguing results. And at the centre of them all is the mystery of dark matter.

Verlinde has been hailed as the intellectual successor to Einstein in the media, yet he sees his goal in more down to earth terms. “I’m just trying to explain where gravity comes from,” he says.

That might seem a bizarre statement, coming a century after Einstein showed that gravity is the result of matter warping space and time around it. Yet according to Verlinde, this overlooks the fact that General Relativity remains just a description of the force we call gravity. It leaves unanswered the key question of exactly how matter affects space and time.

Newton’s gravity theory may be wrong, but Newtonian physics still works perfectly here on earth.

Many people who for political reasons, think that science is the end all to be all truth just don't know science. As long as a unifying theory hasn't been found, all bets are off the table.

Gravity is still a thing despite any revisions to our early understanding of it. The same goes for evolution. We will learn more and revise, because that's what science does.

"Just a theory"

Which is the i proved by...you guessed it...better scientific theories. Not by doubting it for no good reason and then substituting whatever magical fetish pleases you. So you're missing the mark.

Interesting. Remember the law of increasing entropy is an impenetrable barrier which no evolutionary mechanism yet suggested has ever been able to overcome. Evolution and entropy are opposing and mutually exclusive concepts. If the entropy principle is really a universal law, then evolution must be impossible.

Something’s wrong with gravity

This article from 2017 challenges it. "Particle dark matter is essential to obtain the correct predictions for the temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background. That’s a remarkable achievement, and no alternative for dark matter can be taken seriously so long as it cannot do at least as well. Unfortunately, Verlinde’s emergent gravity model does not allow the necessary analysis – at least not yet.

In summary, particle dark matter is doing fine, and emergent gravity still has a long road ahead to outcompete it."

Like we have been saying evolution and gravity is just a theory...

Evolution and gravity are facts. A theory of evolution or a theory of gravity are plausible explanations for such facts. And the sentence "Newton was wrong" is wrong. The theory of Newton is only wrong in case of some conditions, what he never thought about. The theory of Newton was replaced - better to say "enlarged" - from the theory of relativity of Albert Einstein. Since more then a hundred years every single test (experiment and observation) of the theory of Albert Einstein was definetelly correct. A short time ago some scientists from the University of California in Los Angeles found even out it is also exact in the very near of the supermassive black hole in in the middle of our milky way. They watched since 24 years S0-2 who circles around Sagittarius A* - as far as I know with the help of the W.M. Keck-Oberservatorium Hawaii. The observation showed the gravitational redshift in the near of this black hole.

Over 100 years later and we're still relentlessly testing Relativity. Manmade global warming has "consensus" and needs no further testing. The former is science, the latter a Cult.

Newton’s gravity theory may be wrong, but Newtonian physics still works perfectly here on earth.

"Perfectly? Within its usual applications. To measure the error would require billions in technology and even then it occurs many times within usual measuring errors so the error is basically irrelevant when applied on earth.....or virtually anywhere else really. Science is neither right nor wrong; merely consistent with observations.

Newtonian Physics allows for remarkably accurate predictions except in the realm of the hypersmall or hypermassive.

Newtonian Physics is a predictive tool, it explains what gravity does. It doesn't explain how gravity does it.

This is news?
Observations on general relativity supplanted Newton's theory over a century ago.

even Albert Einstein’s theories are “starting to fray around the edges
This was known over half a century ago, with vacuum fluctuations.

Verlinde has been hailed as the intellectual successor to Einstein in the media, yet he sees his goal in more down to earth terms. “I’m just trying to explain where gravity comes from,” he says.

Verlinde's theory is interesting but controversial. It is far from finished, and it's way to early to tell if it it works, and that he will ever be the intellectual successor to anyone. The author of the article Something’s wrong with gravity is most likely a journalist who is trying to write a "wow" article.
