The move has generated much controversy in Zimbabwe and the director of Bubye Valley, Byron du Preez told EFE that the matter had been discussed but for now it is not necessary. The other option is to find another park that agrees to host the lions, as was done last year with some rhinos in the Malilangwe reserve, which were transferred to Botswana.
According to Du Preez, in the reserve there are currently between 503 and 522 lions, a figure that can only be maintained if hunting is allowed, as the lions cause a decrease in other species. Lions are a very sensitive issue in Zimbabwe since the death of the famous lion, Cecil, at the hands of an American hunter last year.
