I continue to be amazed by how nonchalant many law breakers are.
On Rock Center tonight there was an Alabama farmer who knowingly hired illegal immigrants and she didn't seem bothered about broadcasting that to the nation. She criticized the governor and the new law. Of course it wasn't her fault for growing things which she couldn't harvest without breaking the law.
There was an illegal immigrant who let herself be interviewed for the national audience and called Americans racist for daring to think that she shouldn't be here illegally and for being glad that laws would start being enforced.
There was a college professor who equated enforcing laws against hiring illegal immigrants to the civil rights battles of the 1960's.
The governor of Alabama naturally objected to the negative characterizations. He agreed Alabama was breaking the law in the 1960's and the federal government rightly cracked down, but said that what is happening now is just the opposite. The federal government is the one ignoring the law and Alabama is being maligned for trying to enforce it.
He had sympathy for those who are suffering but he seemed reasonably baffled about what to say to a woman who knowingly hires illegal aliens, announces it to everyone, and then criticizes him for saying that can't go on.
