RAFAH, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - The Emir of Qatar entered the Gaza Strip on Tuesday for a visit that broke the isolation of it Islamist rulers, Hamas, but disappointed Israel and mainstream Palestinian leaders in the West Bank.

Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani crossed into Gaza from Egypt at the head of a large delegation on what is billed as a humanitarian visit to inaugurate $250 million worth of reconstruction projects.

It was the first trip by a head of state to Gaza since 1999 and the emir was given a red-carpet welcome by Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, who declared it a historic day for the enclave, which backs on to the Mediterranean sea.

GAZA, (PIC)-- Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani has arrived in the Gaza Strip along with his wife Sheikha Mozah Al Missned on a landmark visit for one day during which he will lay the foundation stones of vital projects.

The visit is considered the first of its kind made by an Arab head of state to the besieged enclave.

Sheikh Hamad Al Khalifa and his delegation was received by Palestinian premier Ismail Haneyya, his ministers, dignitaries, school students and civilians in the Palestinian side of Rafah border area, where a majestic presidential reception was held.

Thousands of Palestinians have lined along the main roads of Gaza since the early morning hours waving Palestinian and Qatari flags and carrying banners welcoming the Qatari emir and his delegation.

"The visit is considered the first of its kind made by an Arab head of state to the besieged enclave".

Is there some reason that arab "heads of state" avoided their "besieged" bretheren for so long? I know they have very BUSY-----I actually visited LAS VEGAS once------It is boring for me ----but it is certainly CHOCK FULL OF EMIRATI "royalty" --------of course they did look very BUSY in those casinos. gee---maybe if gaza could put a few roulette wheels in--------it could have MORE EMIR's show up

It is indeed a welcome development.

Qatar has replaced Syria and Iran as Hamas host so Hamas has changed and moved away from the Iranian terrorist network back to the Sunni Muslim brotherhood mainstream which can put pressure on Hamas to moderate its ultra extremist stance and crack down on the rocket shooters which it is already doing.

it helped the Israelis kill the 2 Al Qa'ida types yesterday..

Qatar has easy connection to the west, to Israel and can mediate and finance Gaza's development eg the undersea gas Gaza has.

Hamas is "coming in from the cold"......in short

i think the west and Israel will be forced to deal with Hamas differently now; they always could have done but chose to ravage Gaza instead in cast lead.
