President of US or Just 'The Progressives?'

President of US or Just 'The Progressives?'

Good question. We've been listening to 8 years of: "He's YOUR President, not mine." So do those who neither voted for nor support the Great Obama Lama have the option of disclaiming him?

Excuse me while I don't anxiously await the hypocritical bullshit we'll hear in response to THAT for the next 4 years.

Let me be the first to say Obama is not your president! :)

Sadly your choices are to live here or move, same as the choices given to the left for the past eight years.

I hope that is not hypocritical.

Its a mandate to change, and move away from as rapidly as possible, the Bush/Republican policies of the last 8 years.

That's just a simple fact.

No one is claiming its a mandate for Marxism.

The republican ideas of the last 8 years are off the table: from SS privatization, to denying climate change, to roadblocking stem cell research, to corporate deregulation, to staying in Iraq with no timetables.

Do you really think we should be negotiating privatization of social security, or negotiating with republicans about roadblocking stem cell research? I don't think so.

If republicans want to give their input on middle class tax cuts, or on how to withdraw from iraq, that's fine. Bipartisanship is fine. But, there is absolutely no reason to negotiate on the failed bush policies of the last 8 years; the very policies republicans voted with and defended 90% of the time. The country wants to move away from those policies.

I don't know uif we are agreeing or disagreeing. Obama and the democrats have control of congress.

If they blow it by chasing away moderates, they will not have control for long.

Policies must be enacted carefully with that in mind, IMO.

I know what you're saying.

I don't see anything particularly radical about Obama's agenda. Withdrawl timetables from Iraq, full speed ahead on stem cell research, finally admitting we have a problems with climate change that must be dealt with in a substantive way, tax cuts for the middle class, and universal access to private healthcare.

I think liberals and moderates largely agree with those goals. I think the country overwhelmingly supports them.

Now, if republicans come to the table calling for privatization of social security, roadblocking stem cell research, and an occupation of Iraq that has no withdrawl timetables, do you think we should sit down and negotiate with those extremely unpopular positions? I wouldn't.

If republicans have some ideas on how to structure middle class tax cuts, or how to provide effective oversight and regulation of wall street, I'm cool with that.

Sorry, this was a mandate.

365 Electoral votes.

A 260 to 175 majority in the House.

A 15 to 18 majority in the Senate.

The large majority of Governorships.

A complete rejection of the Bush policies...the very policies you voted for twice, and republicans in congress voted with 90% of the time for 8 years.

Hopefully, Obama is going to work on healthcare, energy independence, tax cuts for the middle class, Iraq, and the economy. If republicans want to tag along, I'm sure they'll have opportunities to chime in. But privitization of social security is off the table, there's not going to be any more road blocks to stem cell research, global warming denialists will be asked to sit in the back of the bus, and judges who want to outlaw abortion are are going to have their resumes put in the circular file.

Unfortunately, all almost all moderates in your party are defeated. You know, the ones who want to limit stem cell research, and deny climate change?

I'm sure republicans will have an opportunity to chime in some ideas about healthcare. And I don't think anybody really wants government-owned hospitals and doctors like in the UK. So, I don't think "socialists", "marxists", or extreme right wingers are going to get much of what they want.

Oh brother. Here we go. "It's a mandate."

Where's that jerking off emoticon when you actually need it?:eusa_eh:

mandate n

1: a document giving an official instruction or command [syn: authorization, authorisation]

2: a territory surrendered by Turkey or Germany after World War I and inhabited by people not yet able to stand by themselves and so put under the tutelage of some other European power [syn: mandatory]

3: (politics) the commission that is given to a government and its policies through an electoral victory v 1: assign under a mandate; of nations 2: assign authority to

Technically every incoming administration is handed a mandate.

In the way that the word is commonly used now? That is to say: an overwhemling license to do as it will come hell or high water?

Not hardly.

Obama will be given four years to make progress.

Congress will be under Democratic control duing that time, too, so our expectations on him to do something productive will be even higher than they would be otherwise.

If he and the Dems start acting like Bush did when he imagined he had a mandate to run roughshod over things?

I expect Obama will be seeking employment elsewhere.

If Obama HELPS the middle class to get out of the trap they're in, he's going to win hands down in 2012.

That's who put him in office, and that's who will take him out if he fails, too.

Not exactly. While I wouldn't say something like, "He's not my president", we've been hearing that from the whacks on the left for 8 years. Now you're hearing it from whacks on the right. In either case, they don't need to claim 'the man', but whoever is elected, be it a Bush for 2 terms, a Clinton for 2 terms, now an Obama for at least 1, He/She IS the President of the United States, which is our country.
