It makes plenty of sense. All Putin wants is to discredit the US and see it collapse. Putin only cares about Trump to the degree he can play that fool to get to his ends. Putin would relish another chance to humiliate Trump and what better way then to back Democrats. However, Putin knows Democrats are not fools like Republicans and would still go after them regardless of their clandestine support. So, I would be surprised if the Russians really supported Democrats because better to keep the fools they are with for as long as they can string them along.
