Per Ancestry.com, one of my ancestors was a Lieutenant in the Confederate Army.

I'm neither proud or sad about it. It was a different time, with different values. I will say this...his descendants were for the most part decent God loving people who contributed to the advancement of this nation. And even to the integration of Black Americans, within the confines of their time.

Why wouldn't you be proud of him ....

I knew before ancestry.com was created that I was related to General Sherman. I just didn't know how closely.
I also found out I'm a direct descendant of Samuel Lincoln from Massachusetts on my Mom's side.....Daniel & Squire Boone on my father's side. My grandmother was Jennie A. Boone.

I also found out that my family was descended from Clan Keith in Scotland, and my ancestor was one of the friends of Robert The Bruce and King Edward The Bruce High King of Ireland

Wars of Scottish Independence

In 1308, Robert the Bruce granted the royal Halforest of Aberdeenshire to his friend, Robert de Keith.[1] Here the Marischal built his castle.[1] His nephew was William Keith of Galston who returned Bruce's heart to Melrose Abbey after the death of the Sir James Douglas at the Battle of Teba in Andalucia.[1] Bruce confirmed to the family the hereditary office of marischal by a charter of 1324 and Sir Robert de Keith had commanded the Scottish cavalry at the Battle of Bannockburn.[1] The office was held upon the condition that they bore the ancient arms that they had inherited from Marbhachair Chamuis.[1]

Sir Robert Keith, the Marishchal, escorted the young David II of Scotland when he fled to France to escape the usurpation Edward Balliol.[1]

I'm supposedly related to Aaron Burr, the man who shot Alexander Hamilton in a duel.

He wasn't black by the way. That play got it wrong.

Some of my people came over on the Mayflower.....totally ruined my gangsta DNA mindset finding that one out. You can't get more white bread than Pilgrim genes.

My wife is a descendant of Robert E. Lee.....She has a lot of first line Confederate officers from Virginia in her pedigree as you might expect.

As best as I can tell I only had one officer (Major) but he was killed at 1st Manassas.....The rest were infantrymen (Pvts and NCOs) in the 33rd Virginia Infantry Regiment, part of the Stonewall Brigade.

What does who a family member was, good or bad, hundreds of years ago have to do with you right now?

I could have an ancestor that was a baby raping Nazi Jew killing Satan worshipper. Ok, has nothing to do with me right now because I'm not that person and their actions mean nothing to me.

And stop trying to apologize for something someone did in the past, in a round about way you're trying rationalize and justify your ancestors. You should be thanking for them for helping build the country we now live in.
