Research into Ozzy Osbourne's DNA will cost genetics experts in Massachusetts $40,000 and take them three months to map out. Scientists at DNA-testing company Knome have taken a blood sample from the heavy rocker, who has survived decades of abusing drugs and alcohol.

They hope to discover how some people can survive extreme substance abuse, while others can't. Now sober, Osbourne estimates he took drugs and used alcohol to excess for over 40 years.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, especially after Ronnie James Dio died, and it doesn't surprise me.

- RJD: Never took drugs, didn't get totally wasted, was a real stand-up kinda guy, incredible singer throughout his entire career, etc. = Relatively unknown outside the metal community + Dead from stomach cancer.
- Ozzy: Did every kind of drug and spent 40 years blacked out drunk and full of coke, barely able to hit his notes for the past 20 years = Supermillionaire with reality TV show, health advice column, pop culture icon + Alive and kicking
