The populist view is that Hagels war experience would give him a better understanding.

On the other hand, you could rationally argue that he is too subjectively close to the action to make a rational, objective decision in the best interest of the US and the world.

The fact that he received two Purple Hearts is really irrelevant to being made a Secretary of Defense as all it means is that he was wounded twice in action the same as hundred and thousands of veterans!

I hardly think that Hagel has a deep enough understanding of radical Muslims that he can stand there and offer up excuses for why they murdered so many people. I'm surprised the left isn't blaming the availability of bombs and other weapons. Perhaps they should put more restrictions on that stuff and that should curb terrorism. Never blame the people behind it, just blame inanimate objects for enticing people to commit henious acts.

If he does have such intimate knowledge of how they think, I would ask why.
