They are right. We are 'of America'. United Statisians is probably accurate.

    Canadians are "Americans" by geography.

Wrong. Canadians are North Americans. Mexicans are North Americans. Americans are North Americans. But when one says "American," one speaks of this country - the USA!!!

Americans are those from "America" = America = The Western Hemisphere. We "sub-divide" into "North And South" - of which, these Fifty states have 'United'.

Again, incorrect. There is no continent called "America," nor are all land masses in the Western Hemisphere (to include Ireland, Iceland, and Greenland) considered part of America. There is a continent of North America, on which lies a country called the United States of America. The shortened name of our country is America (hence, Americans), just like the United States of Indonesia is shortened to Indonesia.

I feel better having read this

I can believe that a 'social studies' advisory group discussed such a zonked out idea. I hate 'social studies.' I think 'history' should be taught, along with geography in elementary education. I think it would be great for 'advanced' students to be able to take an intro course to sociology, anthropology, economics, archeology, political science in secondary school, but 'required?' No.

Most of the dumbing down in American students history education can be laid at the feet of the 'social studies' movement. Too many disciplines all vying for very limited time, from kindergarten on...
