As long as there are people in this world who hate us, yes: The possibility of being incinerated will always be a deterrent to aggression.

We could have saved ourselves and the rest of the world alot of misery had we had them before WW2 broke out.

Yes...mutually assured destruction is an amazing preventative measure. Many argue the fact that there are countries armed with nuclear weapons has averted another world war. I tend to agree.
