Novak Djokovic defaulted from US Open after hitting line judge with ball - Sportsnet.ca

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has been defaulted from his Round of 16 match at the US Open after hitting a line judge with a ball at the end of a game.

After Pablo Carreno Busta broke Djokovic’s serve to take a 6-5 lead in the first set, Djokovic took a ball out of pocket and hit it towards the back wall, hitting the line judge.

Carreno Busta will now advance to the quarterfinals and face the winner of Sunday night’s match between Canada’s Denis Shapovalov and David Goffin.

Busta or Goffin will win

Busta is a physically tough match and Djoker just won the Cincy masters a week before
His body just gave out

Novak has always been an asshole. And, at his skill level, there is ZERO chance he mistakenly hit her. Zero.

he apologized on instagram. this is ridiculous. serbians are known to be...angry people!

but at least it opens it up for whoever wins between Zverev and Coric to take the trophy!

this is such a joke! Novak clearly had no intention of hurting the line judge. Was he in the wrong? Absolutely. But he’s human. He makes mistakes just like everyone else does. Better yet, this is the US Open we’re talking about and he’s chasing history!

What happened
I have been to 9 events and every time ..the fans hate him

He treats fans like crap. He is an asshole to his opponents for the most part, and when he does stupid stuff like this, he pouts.

It’s a bad decision and really screws Djoker from an easy slam and he may never catch nadal

If it was the first time you might have a point. It's not. He has done this multiple times. At his skill level he is accurate to within inches, he got unlucky in that he hit her in the throat, but he knows better than to do that sort of crap.

It's the correct decision. He has history and he could have really hurt her. The Open made the decision quick, as they should. At his level you don't hit judges. EVER.

It was a poor decision. Anyone who saw the video (the ones who made the final decision DID NOT review the video) knows that it was totally inadvertent. He hit the ball off the court in frustration, and the line judge just happened to be in the wrong place. It was analogous to a frustrated player hitting a ball into the stands - which occasionally happens.

To DQ the number one seed in a major championship over an innocent, inadvertent micro-outburst was just poor judgment. The rule addresses INTENTIONAL harmful actions, and this was clearly not that.

Penalize him a couple points or a game, but the DQ was a very bad decision. It compromises the whole tournament. Whoever wins will forever be hounded by the thought that, "Yes, I won, but..."

Thiem is my man now. If only to refute the lie that there is no 'i' in Thiem.
