'Noah' film denied release in China ? Japan Today: Japan News and Discussion

"China has refused to approve the release of biblical epic “Noah” starring Russell Crowe, which has already been banned in a string of Muslim countries for religious reasons, industry sources said.

Paramount Pictures tried to secure a release slot for the vast Chinese mainland market by stressing its “environmental message” and special effects, the Los Angeles Times reported.

But getting the Bible-based story past China’s cinematic gatekeepers was stymied due to Beijing’s sensitivities on religious issues, according to the Hollywood Reporter trade journal."

I'm guessing the film has already been bootlegged and downloaded about a million times in China already.

They aren't missing much, what a horrible movie. The Chinese government is doing them a favor

The movie is not a 'biblical epic'. It is a left wing environmentalist propaganda film.

Maybe China is smarter than we suspect.

proselytizing in China is not allowed. Showing a biblical film would be promoting the judeo/christian religion.

And they couldn't be having that in Communist China.
Won't it be fun when communist China takes over America, the West and then the whole world?
Luckily, as fate would have it, I won't be here then. :)

Nobody will, because it won't happen.

Under China's quota system for imported films, 14 slots per year are set aside specifically for "enhanced-format" films such as this. Many foreign films are rejected. Typically they reject foreign movies that are partially or wholly about China, most war movies, movies with strong religious content or political content. They rejected "Avatar" and "World War Z". Actually they don't really reject films very often. Usually, they just keep them under review and never get around to approving it.

China has long supported the idea of Chinese films for Chinese audience. As with most imports, they seek to protect local industries from foreign competition. However, when it comes to films they also want to protect to country from what they feel might be subversive ideas.
