Nearby Star Has 7 Earth-Sized Worlds - Most In Habitable Zone

It will be announced tomorrow by NASA that Michael Gillon et al have confirmed 4 more Earth-sized planets circling TRAPPIST-1 in addition to 3 already discovered.
It is possible that most of the planets confirmed thus circling far TRAPPIST-1 could be in the star's habitable zone. The inner 6 planets are probably rocky in composition and may be just the right temperature for liquid water to exist (between 0 - 100 degrees C) - if they have any water, that is. The outermost 7th planet still needs some more observations to nail down its orbit and composition.

Fucking awesome!!! Love science and love nasa!!!

Earth First!

We'll strip mine the other planets later.

Before you get too excited you may want to look at the distances from their parent star. And their orbital period. These planets are much, much closer to thier star than earth.

Global warming? There isn't any global warming, it's always 150 degrees Celsius

It's nice to see that Trump's directions for NASA to concentrate on exploration instead of their previous climate change directive is pleasing to Matthew.

Now to reinstate a launch program for our astronauts.

:)

Look at the amount of blue, which indicates water...

... as compared to all the others...

... don't look too habitable, do they?

They don't know that. LOL

Its a dwarf star it output is a lot smaller than our sun.

3 of the 7 planets are in the habitable zone and they are only 40 light years away. I don't think it will get much better than this

ONLY 40 light years away? Light travels at 186,000 miles per SECOND, and a light year is how far light will travel in a YEAR.

Even 1/2 a light year is still WAAAYYY out of our reach, never mind 40.

Tyrone, do you know why most stars have arabic names? Or why algebra is called algebra? Of course, after that they had rulers which despised knowledge. Kind of like the guy we just elected.

For now yes

Not really. If those new engines that keep slowly adding acceleration become feasible, we can get to high speeds. A spacecraft that can get to just half the speed of light would only take 80 years to get there. It sounds like a long time, but in the long run it's doable. Especially for just a probe or seeding the planet with our most basic life forms. Any manned mission after confirmation of it being habitable would be a one way colonization ship with the first generation living most of their life on the journey there.

First we get to Mars so we are close to the meteor belt. There we have all the natural resources we need to build a huge spaceship that people can live on for 80 years.

The asteroid belt is the circumstellar disc in the Solar System located roughly between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter. It is occupied by numerous irregularly shaped bodies called asteroids or minor planets.

7 earth-like planets that could sustain alien life discovered. And today California granted them drivers licenses.

The same around a G-class star with planets rotating + large moons = better.
