Looking back, why did everyone freak out about McCain's 100 years in Iraq comment?

This isn't a pro-McCain thread, instead of standing by his comment he cowardly ran from it.

But it sounds perfectly logical to me, almost common sense.

We've had troops in Germany and Japan etc for almost 70 years, I expect them to be there 30 years from now.

Look at the embassy in Iraq and all the troops still there, what caused the meltdown about the 100 year comment? Why do people think it'll be handled differently than we have every other county we've had a war against in the last 70 years?

Because everyone except McCain knew we couldn't afford to keep troops in Iraq for another 100 years.

We haven't been able to afford troops in Germany and Japan for 70 years and we've done it, what's that matter?

Because it was taken out of context, like so many soundbites were/are during what we call the political season. It was just as foolish to say that McCain wanted to keep combat operations going in Iraq for a hundred years as it was to say Obama was a Marxist/Socialist because of his encounter with Joe the lying plumber's Helper and the "gotta Spread the Wealth" statement was.

Some people make quite a living by taking this kinda shit out of context.

To me I just think it was an exposed truth that neither side wanted to hear.

That's why us having troops in so many ridiculous places like Germany, Japan, South Korea etc is never talked about. Neither side wants to make a big deal of it, and since the media can't play the "Rep vs Dem" "Con vs Lib" game on this subject it's thrown out.
