I can't find the old thread, but a couple weeks ago some UN backers were moaning about the US not responding to the invitation, they now have their reply:

Bush Sends Regrets on U.N. Celebration
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

SAN FRANCISCO, June 15 - Organizers of a celebration here to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations had expressed concern for weeks that the Bush administration would shun the event as a snub to the world body.

On Wednesday, organizers learned that big-name invitees - among them, President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - would not attend.

In their place, said Nancy L. Peterson, president of the United Nations Association of San Francisco, the administration indicated that it would send Ambassador Sichan Siv, the United States representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

"I am just reading into this that the administration is taking a very dubious stance symbolically toward the importance of the United Nations to the American people," she said. :rotflmao:

A State Department spokesman confirmed that Mr. Siv would attend the event, which will be held on June 25 and 26, citing scheduling conflicts for Ms. Rice and for Robert B. Zoellick, the deputy secretary of state.

"Secretary Rice and Deputy Secretary Zoellick have numerous commitments and invitations," the spokesman, Noel Clay, said. "At times, they will conflict, but it is not a slight whatsoever."

On June 26, 1945, delegates from around the world, meeting in San Francisco, signed the founding charter of the United Nations.

This only further undermines US credibility in the international community and shows the Bush administration for the unilateralist, isolationist buffoons they are.

Condi's actions are reminiscent of a child in a sandbox who isn't getting her way so she picks up her toys and goes home. And, as it always goes in such situations the other kids, if they notice at all, simply point and laugh.

The shouldn't laugh and point too much or maybe we will take our toys and go home..And we have some nice toys too....
The United States is the largest financial contributor to the UN and has been every year since its creation in 1945. We provided more than $3 billion in contributions, both cash and in-kind, to the UN system in 2002. (In-kind contributions include items such as food donations for the World Food Program). The United States funded 22 percent of the UN regular budget, as well as more than 27 percent of the peacekeeping budget. Additionally, the United States provides a significant amount in voluntary contributions to the UN and UN-affiliated organizations and activities, mostly for humanitarian and development programs.

The behavior of a child, not exactly suited to leading a nation let alone the international community.

International community???? Why would anyone give a damn about undermining the United States credibility in an international community???? We aren't an international community!!!! We are the United States of America, period. And if we had more true isolationist we would be a lot better off. The only thing any other country in the world wants from the United States is its money. Get the star war defense up and running, bring all our citizens home and the first plane to cross into the United States air space, bomb it out of the sky. Same for ships that try to come in. Thats ny feeling and I'm damn sure not going to apologize for it.

The "international community" are still lost in the regular failed state department mentality that supports atrocity in the name of "stability" the very actions that caused the attack on 9/11. Any change whatsoever is better than returning to the same failed actions and believing "with all your heart" that it will net a different result. That, in fact, is one of the definitions of insanity: Taking the same action repeatedly, but expecting a different result. I thought you were smarter than this Bully. Just because there are a lot of people on a train doesn't mean that the train's destination is where you want to go.

bureaucracy that exists merely to line the pockets of it's bureaucrats and to serve as a a complaint forum by third world dictatorships to vent their spleens with Anti-American rhetoric. Tell me Bully are you proud to be an American? In any fashion?

It's the international community who has lost credibility...The rest of the world is judged by OUR standards, not the other way around.

F'em.

In a USA agains the World fight, I'd put money on us.

Awww c'mon Bully. Even you can't say that with a straight face. Who gives a rat's ass about our "credibility in the international community". It's way past time that we "buffoons" start doing what is in our best interest and you damn well know it.

Credibility = exchange rate for the US dollar. And I totally agree. The world wants our money, and they want our firepower when they see fit; otherwise, we're offending most of them most of the time.

Let 'em take care of themselves, and we should do likewise. Those forward deployed troops would look mighty impressive patrolling OUR borders.

Because we didn't go to a party and hang out with the Mafiosi at the UN?

The US pays for a major share of the UN's bills, the UN sits on what used to be US soil.... the US has done more for the UN than the UN has done for the US....

Speaking of dissing the UN, i heard that the House has just slashed amount of money going to the UN in half. First good thing ive heard from Congress in a long time.

I think the UN should become its own separate country and stay out of our beeswax!

Yeah, the UN headquarters in NYC should be its own little country like Vatican City. If anyone in it wants to leave, they'll have to apply for temporary visas and pay a steep fee to "cross the border". I dunno, I'm just thinking out loud right now.......:dunno:
