Has there ever been an American politician more unfairly maligned than Joe McCarthy?

The problem here is you are going overboard

Mccarthy was a man and like any man had flaws

He was never a war hero and was known to exaggerate his exploits in wwii.

He was an alcoholic although this seems to have developed later in life.

On the other hand his accusations of treason by communists working on our government were spot on correct.

I don't believe such a man deserves a medal however his questions and accusations do need to be followed up on and upheld as an example.

He was not paranoid about communists as some claim he was in fact accurate.

The most important thing he did was to ask why? Why is the government turning a blind eye to treason and espionage within the government itself.

That is something we deserve answers to and need to hold the government accountable.

I consider a guy who flew 13 combat missions to be a war hero even if he did exaggerate it a bit. You don't have to be awarded a chest full of medals or single handedly take out an entire platoon with an entrenching tool to be a war hero in my opinion. Not only were the communists tolerated, Joe McCarthy was viciously attacked in every aspect of his life for years until he became paranoid and took to drinking. If he had exposed Nazis, the left would be worshipping him. He absolutely brought a legitimate issue to the nation's attention.

He was a decorated war hero that endured years and years of vicious abuse from Communist sympathizers in the government, media, and educational system for exposing the level of Communist infestation in America at the time. After Communism was eventually thoroughly debunked, those cockroaches switched to being "Democratic Socialists".
