The problem is the possibility of abuse by government with laws like this.

Agreed. At the minimum any law should require 1) the order has to be signed by a judge 2) the person has the right to contest the order, and a hearing has to be held within 1 week 3) Any firearms are not seized, but put into a form of escrow. 4) No extensions allowed. Either the State has to prove the person is unfit, or they get their firearms back after the hearing.

Laws like this, mentally fit laws and internment laws were all abused previously to take away personal and private property. There are laws already enough on the books that are used, skewed and abused to steal private property from people.
