Fuzzy bears!
Obviously there's a lack of information here, but to me it sounds like a freak accident. I've seen news stories of this kind of thing before, although I can't remember any specifics offhand.
What would the charges be against this man if his victim had simply been knocked out, or even just gotten a bruised jaw and backed off? Unless there's reason to believe there was an intent to kill, I don't think anyone could reasonably claim he should have known he might kill the victim. So, again not taking any forthcoming information into account, this sounds like a manslaughter case and one in which a relatively light sentence would be called for, especially when you add likely assault charges.
Oh, and as far as any martial arts training the man might have had : I am far from an expert, but I don't think that even with such training anyone would expect to kill a person with a single blow to the side of the face (as described in the original link). If such an event were at all likely I'd think we'd see quite a few deaths in MMA or martial arts competitions, and so far as I'm aware that doesn't happen. Had he punched the victim in the throat it would be a different story. Also, I don't think the size of the victim would have too much effect on whether a single punch leads to death.
