Since becoming Prime Minister of India in May 2014, Narendra Modi has tried hard to boost ties with the Asian giant to ensure peace, stability and economic development in the region. However, Beijing is interested only in strengthening economic ties with India.

Especially after the Sino-Indian relations took a downturn because of China that recently blocked an Indian move at the UN to seek an explanation from Pakistan for releasing alleged 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi from prison, Modi realises that Beijing is a tough nut to crack. However, he has decided to add new incentive to bilateral ties with the establishment of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) economic corridor in order to achieve more ambitious goals.

Even the Chinese officials have admitted that India is showing interests in some major projects, including the BCIM economic corridor that will link eastern Indian port city of Kolkata with China’s Kunming via Myanmar and Bangladesh. Addressing a press conference in Beijing, a senior Chinese official recently said that both the Asian countries agreed to link Indian Province of West Bengal with China’s Yunnan Province through the proposed corridor.

Deputy Director General of International Regional Co-operation Office of Yunnan Jin Cheng informed the media that the construction work of main roadway of the 2,800km-long K (Kolkata)-2-K (Kunming) corridor would be completed with the upgradation of nearly 200km stretch of the all-weather road (from Kalewa to Monywa in Myanmar). “The second is the segment between Silchar in Assam and Imphal in Manipur, which India is upgrading,” he stressed.

Jin also said that the corridor would head from Kolkata towards Benapole in Bangladesh and would re-enter the Indian territory near Silchar in Assam after passing through Dhaka and Sylhet in Bangladesh. Beijing plans to connect rest of the passage with the India-built Tamu-Kalewa friendship road in Myanmar. The official explained that Myanmmar’s Mandalay would be the next focal point of the corridor before the road enters Yunnan after crossing the Myanmarsese cities of Lashio and Muse. Meanwhile, the Chinese stretch will be extended from Ruili to Kunming through Longling and Dali.

Jin claimed that the proposed corridor would certainly reduce the four Asian countries dependence on the Straits of Malacca – which is militarily dominated by the US – for transporting cargo.
