Government pledges redundancy protection for parents
Pregnant women and new parents returning to work will receive greater protection from redundancy under new government plans.
In proposals announced by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) on Thursday, women on maternity leave and new parents - including those returning from adoption or shared parental leaver - will receive additional safeguards from unfairly losing their jobs.
The proposals argue that current legal protection against redundancy for pregnant women and new mothers on maternity leave should be extended for up to six months after they return to work, and seek views on affording similar safeguards to parents returning from adoption leave or shared parental leave.
Well there is a first time for everything. My wife was affected by this issue when we had our first child 23 years ago. Long overdue in my opinion.
