I had a socialist debate with me that "illegals don't go home because they are afraid of detention"

This is the logic that America and the world is facing.

"Illegal immigrants don't go back home to Mexico because they fear detention".

First, there are few instances I imagine in which a person goes "home" for good, once they are in America illegally. Maybe they go home for a short visit and to drop off some cash, but I assume they come back.

Second, can anyone with a straight face suggest that this is the reason they are staying in America instead of returning to the place from which they entered the U.S illegally?

They are coming to America because the precedent has been set that once they cross the border and set up a residence, have a family, etc, they get to stay.
