Here's what you probably don't know: Hostess was in bankruptcy from 2004-2009. A private equity firm tied to Richard Gephardt bought them out of bankruptcy.

The bakers union turned down having 2 board representatives and 25% equity in the company

Unions were never interested in making a deal

Why would management bankrupt a company they were drawing large salaries from?
Duh.

It's kind of like stealing the silverware on the way out of a burning house. They were loading up their golden parachutes and richly rewarding themselves for failure. All of them will end up on the boards of other companies and loot them too. As long as executives can do that kind of thing and their failures are not held against them then this kind of thing will continue to be the normal operating procedure of American corporate take-overs.

Hostess' executive board wanted to reduce the bakers' pay and pensions so the company's bottom line would be greater when they pulled the plug. The bakers union knew that which is why they wouldn't go along.

The labor relations and corporate regulations that once prevented such maneuvers must be reinstated. None of the schemes and scams which have brought the U.S. Economy to near collapse could have been implemented before the "Reagan Revolution," which kicked off a progression of deregulation which spanned the Reagan, Clinton and Bush administrations.

Most if not all of the preventive regulations were put in place during the FDR Administration in response to the abuses which facilitated the rise of the Gilded Age and led ultimately to the Great Depression. We are seeing the effects of the deregulations today.

Imagine what would happen if the laws against shoplifting and forgery were quietly abolished. That situation is analogous to what has happened within the banking and finance industries. And the Congress is doing nothing about it. Some of the worst offenders have been allowed to walk away smiling with massive hoards of money obtained by exploiting the absence of regulations that once kept them honest.
