Here's something I wrote in another message forum just yesterday:

A quick Iran Wikipedia google gives a pretty decent understanding of why they might have a problem with the US-dominated West:

1941 – British and Russian troops invaded neutral Iran during WWII for logistical assets and overthrew Iran’s Shah to occupy the sovereign nation. Stalin gonna Stalin so the Soviets trolled post-war Iran creating puppet separatist governments and civil war. The Iran Crisis of 1946 resulted in 2,000 dead as well as still uncompensated for economic damages currently being sought from the UN by Ahmadinejad.

1953 – Shortly after Iran nationalized their petroleum the UK convinced the US to organize a coup to openly overthrow Iran’s democratically elected government and install a US-puppet Shah.

1979 – The puppet Shah was a brutal dictator propped up by the US, so US-Iran tension boiled over following the Iranian Revolution overthrow of the Shah. Iranians seized the US Embassy and took US hostages (released 444 days later); the US enacted economic sanctions (still maintained today lol), froze ~$11B in Iranian assets (still frozen today lol), and broke diplomatic relations with Iran (still broken today lol).

1980-88 – US supported the invading party Iraq before/during the Iran-Iraq War backing Iraq with several $billion in economic aid, dual-use technology, artillery, chemical/biological material & weaponry, military intelligence, special ops training, and direct US military attacks against Iran.

1988 – US navy cruiser paroling Iranian waters mistakes Iran Air Flight 655 for an Iranian F-14 and shoots down the passenger airline killing all 290 civilians onboard. The US admitted negligence but has never formally apologized to Iran for the civilian attack.

1990s – US placed total trade embargoes on Iran and passed an economic sanctions act preventing European investment in Iran. The EU denounced the act as invalid; US ignores EU lol

2000s-present – Iraq is designated part of Bush’s “Axis of Evil”; additional economic sanctions levied; covert and border military action; propaganda, etc etc etc

Good observation. It seems to be the case in many places. Can anyone proffer our government's reaction were China to intervene in the Mexican Drug Cartel/Civil War, or to prop up Chavez in Venezuela?

In the meantime, our government believes it can interfere anywhere, at anytime, and that those who oppose them are terrorists or worse.

Strategic interest, editec, and no matter how convenient it might be to simply leave the Iranian regime to rot on its own (it eventually would). The fact is that with Iran potentially controlling a major chokepoint for a good portion of the world's oil supplies, and with a nuclear armed Iran having the potential to ignite a regional nuclear conflict, we can't simply look the other way. Even if the U. Britain and Europe did not need the oil for transportation,impacting the supply available for industrial use alone would cripple those economies. Whether we LIKE that, and whether we SHOULD be in that situation or not, that's reality as of today. All we can deal with, is what IS, not what MIGHT have been. In addition, there's no guarantee that the regime in question is smart enough to let sleeping dogs lie, even in its own safety interest; it has miscalculated before, and is not unlikely to miscalculate again. Back away from it, and you only encourage it to escalate its risk-taking.

It's not a matter of what course we would like, or whether anyone's hands are particularly clean. What matters, the ONLY thing that matters, is strategic economic imperative. There's no morality in that, and never has been, in the history of the human race; which is why, eventually, we will do what we have to do to protect our interests and those of our allies.Whether we succeed, or fail, neither moral justification, nor any other niceties, will matter; there is only winning, or losing.
