Unidentified assailants opened fire on the German ambassador's residence in Athens with a Kalashnikov assault rifle early on Monday in an attack seen as an attempt to sour relations between debt-laden Greece and its biggest creditor nation.

At least 60 shots were fired in the air and four hit the metal gate of the walled, high-security residence which lies on a busy street of a northern suburb, police said. No one was hurt.

Anti-German sentiment has grown during Greece's prolonged economic crisis and many of those struggling with record unemployment and falling living standards blame Germany's insistence on fiscal rigor for their economic woes.

Germany is the biggest single contributing nation to Greece's 240-billion-euro bailouts which have kept the country afloat since 2010 and saved it from bankruptcy.

well if you decide to build the Fourth Reich by forcing others into poverty - expect the backlash.

except it was Germany which bullied all the small European countries into the euro zone which basically was an overnight robbery of the ordinary citizen across Europe - for the benefit of big corporations, banks and big businesses.

Maybe many of those countries should have been willing to cut back on their over bloated social programs which got them into their mess in the first place.

Many of those countries have taxed the wealthy as much as they could tax them and still had the serious social programs problems which plagues far left thinking.

They had no where else to get money from as the well started running dry.

The small countries hit the hardest relied on the wealthy tourist dollars as the world finical meltdown was swinging in to action.

Then having populations where as much as 45% of the population is dependent on government checks does not help either.

This is the same scenario that the far left wants to recreate here in the states.

Having so many dependent on the government for their "living" has never worked, yet the far left here seems to think it will.
