More than 160,000 Syrian-Kurdish refugees have fled their homes in the northern border town of Kobane, crossing into Turkey to escape advancing Islamic State militants. The Islamic State is engaged in a fierce battle with Kurdish fighters, who are backed by US-led air strikes.

URFA, Turkey: Smoke and bombs, air strikes and shelling have become the daily reality for Kobane's besieged residents. The town on the Turkey-Syria border is a strategic spot for the transfer of weapons and fighters into Syria. Now it is also the site of severe shelling.

Many of Kobane's inhabitants have been forced to seek shelter across the border, and Gamila is one of them. The Syrian-Kurdish refugee from Kobane fled her home with her family after coming face to face with the terror wreaked by Islamic State militants.
