We all know that speech has limits e.g. shouting fire in a crowded theater. Not all speech is protected. If there really were a fire in a crowded theater it would be OK to shout FIRE!
Not all speech is protected. Lying is one example of that. If you slander or libel someone you can get sued. If you make threats you can be arrested. If you run false or deceptive advertising you can face fines and broadcasters can lose their licenses.
As we all know when the political season starts the lie machine will be kicked into overdrive and the fact checkers will be working over time.
Why is it illegal to make false claims about a product or service and OK to make false claims about a person?
How one lie changed to world for the worse.
In the 2000 Republican primaries McCain was leading in the polls in the South. To counter that the Bush campaign conducted a series of robocalls telling voters that McCain had fathered a Black bastard baby. The truth was that McCain and his wife Cindy had adopted baby from I believe India. As a result of that lie McCain plummeted in the polls and Bush who IMO has less integrity in his whole body than John McCain has in his entire body and McCain is also IMO much smarter.
Let's say McCain was the GOP nominee here is what I think would have happened and not happened.
1. 911 would not have happened because McCain would have heeded the warning that Bush ignored.
2. If McCain had to go to war he would not have attacked the wrong country and destabilized the Middle East.
3. Had McCain gone to war he would have listened to his generals, funded the war with taxes and had a clear mission and exit strategy.
4. Currently McCain is trying to reinstate Glass-Steagal so chances are when he saw what the banks were up to he would have put a stop to it.
5. Had McCain been elected president in 2000 the surplus left by Bill Clinton would probably have grown and there would not have been a recession/depression.
See what a lie can do?
Americans have come to tolerate liars and there lies and they expect it from politician and pundits.
