PARIS (AP) — France announced Tuesday that it plans to vote in favor of recognizing a Palestinian state at the U.N. General Assembly this week.

With the announcement, France becomes the first major European country to come out in favor, dealing a setback to Israel. The timing of the announcement appears aimed at swaying other European nations.

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told parliament that France has long supported Palestinian ambitions for statehood and "will respond `Yes'" when the issue comes up for a vote "out of a concern for coherency."

The Palestinians say the assembly is likely to vote Thursday on a resolution raising their status at the U.N. from an observer to a nonmember observer state, a move they believe is an important step toward a two-state solution with Israel. A Palestinian state would still not be a full General Assembly member, however.

Unlike the Security Council, there are no vetoes in the General Assembly

Backbench revolt forces PM to drop Israel support

JULIA GILLARD has been forced to withdraw Australia's support for Israel in an upcoming United Nations vote after being opposed by the vast majority of her cabinet and warned she would be rolled by the caucus.

As a result, Australia will abstain from a vote in the United Nations General Assembly on a resolution to give Palestine observer status in the UN, rather than join the United States and Israel in voting against the resolution as Ms Gillard had wanted.

In a direct rebuff of her leadership, Ms Gillard was opposed by all but two of her cabinet ministers - Bill Shorten and Stephen Conroy, both of the Victorian Right - during a heated meeting on Monday night.

Britain ready to back Palestinian statehood at UN
Britain is prepared to back a key vote recognising Palestinian statehood at the United Nations if Mahmoud Abbas pledges not to pursue Israel for war crimes and to resume peace talks.

Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, has called for Britain's backing in part because of its historic responsibility for Palestine. The government has previously refused, citing strong US and Israeli objections and fears of long-term damage to prospects for negotiations.

On Monday night, the government signalled it would change tack and vote yes if the Palestinians modified their application, which is to be debated by the UN general assembly in New York later this week. As a "non-member state", Palestine would have the same status as the Vatican.

Whitehall officials said the Palestinians were now being asked to refrain from applying for membership of the international criminal court or the international court of justice, which could both be used to pursue war crimes charges or other legal claims against Israel.

So what! Israel would recognize an Independent Palestinian state, if the Palestinians didn't sabotage and do everything they could to prevent one. In reality they don't want to achieve independence, because they could have had it a LONG time ago. With independence comes accountability! Fighting a terrorist war is much easier than leading a nation. Just as the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, as their economy sinks to new low under the current douche bag!

good god the scale and breadth of your ignorance is remarkable Vet...the 67 borders were the basis of resolution 242---which the entire planet supported at the UN---and which the slimy Jews summarily rejected....interesting that you deny a 'right of return" to actual Arab refugees, but advocate the jewish right of return for Jews who never set foot in Palestine...

Good god..... The 67 Borders that the Arabs NEVER recognized or respected? THOSE Borders? lol The 67 Borders that could have been part of the " Palestinian State?" THOSE borders? " Right of Return" eventually making the Jews a minority and eventually over a long period of time actually being an annexation of the " Palestinian State" and Jews being VERBOTEN to even set foot in the " Palestinian State?"

I love the " Code Words" people use. We hear about " negotiations"; Yet if Israel is expected to make ALL the concessions there is nothing to " negotiate" is there? Tell me again..... What EXACTLY are the Palestinians doing to " negotiate"? The answer is " nothing" You are the one who is ignorant.

Spain to vote in favor of UN observer status for Palestine
The Spanish government is expected to vote Thursday in favor of granting Palestine observer status at the United Nations despite a warning from Israel that such a move could limit Spain’s influence in any future peace negotiations.

Foreign Minister José María García-Margallo has already said that he favors allowing the Palestinians to become UN observers. But EL PAÍS learned on Tuesday afternoon that Spain will give Palestine an affirmative vote.

France and Austria both announced on Tuesday that they will also be voting in favor of the initiative. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said that his country has always supported an independent Palestinian state. Michael Spindelegger, the Austrian foreign minister, said Vienna has decided to vote in favor after changes were made to the text of the Palestinians’ petition, meaning they would not gather the right to hold seats on any UN agencies.

So what ground does any European recognition has to change things?

again I can only express astonishment at the routine ignorance that is posted here: Israel has rejected settlement for decades---even rejected substantive negotiation, so the idea of an independent Palestinian state wouldn't even appear on their radar....but even more amazing you dare to lecture about 'accountability' while defending Israel???? At what fkg point have the Jews ever accounted for their crimes you filtered fkg imbecile??? It is recreation hour for the chronically ignorant I guess.....sigh

LOL, go take another picture of you gay looking self. I love when a douche bag like yourself tosses the ignorant world out there, yet when the Jews offered 98% of what the Palestinians wanted and the PALESTINIANS rejected it, you say the Jews rejected it!

And don't blame the Jews because you are a failure at life. If you didn't want to flip burgers, you should have worked harder! Not the Jews fault you're lazy and stupid!

Vet your ignorance is the stuff of roundtable ridicule...you haven't the faintest grasp of the the issues that inform this conflict---yet you routinely invoke your preferred ignorance as if it were inviolable...Israel has conceded nothing---nothing!!!!

Israel has conceded nothing? lol Is that why they left Gaza? Another Pro- Palestinian lie

Haim Ramon, who served as deputy premier under Ehud Olmert and was one of his trusted confidants, said on Monday at the Institute for National Security Studies conference that the Palestinians turned down Olmert’s offer in 2008 because of disagreements regarding the number of refugees to be allowed into Israel, and because of a Palestinian demand to control the “safe passage” that would have linked the Gaza Strip to the West Bank.

At the end of 2008, Olmert offered Abbas 93.5-to-93.7 percent of the West Bank, a one-to-one swap for most of the rest, and an arrangement whereby no one would have sovereignty over the “holy basin” surrounding Jerusalem’s Old City, but rather it would be administered by a consortium made up of the Israelis, Palestinians, Jordanians, Saudis and Americans.

Ramon revealed that in August 2008, he went to Amman to discuss the refuge issue with Abbas. “We wanted to permit a certain number of refugees into the country over a number of years, and they wanted a different number,” Ramon said.

Minister-without-Portfolio Bennie Begin had a far different take on why the Palestinians rejected Olmert’s offer, as well as that of then-prime minister Ehud Barak in 2000.

The Palestinian rejection of both offers, he said, had to do with “the refusal of the Palestinians to understand that Judaism, beyond just being a religion, is also a nationality. Their refusal to recognize this [Israel] as a Jewish state, like their refusal to recognize that the Temple stood on Mount Moriah, expresses their refusal to accept that we have a title to this land.”

The refusal of the above had to do with mainly two issues; " Right of Return" lol ( FORGET THAT ) and " security" between Gaza and the W.Bank; Something Israel is NOT " legally" responsible for but it wasn't good enough? Name just ONE thing the Palestinians have done to " negotiate" You constantly display your ignorance by inferring that the Palestinians have done everything they can and Israel has done nothing.

BTW, Why did Rocket attacks increase immediately after Israel left Gaza??? Won't be an answer there either

The entire planet could recognize "Palestine", but nothing will ever move without Israeli-Palestinian debate.

So what ground does any European recognition has to change things?

The only practical significance it will have for Israel is that it will tend to weaken those Israelis who consider Abbas a legitimate partner for peace and to harden the positions of those who don't. Like nearly all the actions of the terrorist gangs that rule Gaza or the Palestinian Mafia that rules the West Bank, it will bring no benefit to the Palestinian Arabs.

It looks like the Drama Queen is back with his sighing again. The old time Drama Queens wouid have been jealous of his capability of always sighing away at the slightest thing. The big difference, though, is that these old time actresses didn't have to boost their self esteem like Skitzo does by constantly calling other poster derogatory names.

And this will accomplish what? Peace is not an option when one has no desire to achieve such. Palestine was a fragmented region at the turn of the 20th century and remains a fragmented region today, composed of factions all vying for power.

The PM of Australia is a good friend of Israel and wanted to vote NO in company with the USA and others.

The Australian Liberal Party also supports a no vote.

Unfortunately due mainly to the left wing influence in the PM's party and the fact that the Foreign Minister's wife is Malaysian, the PM was unable to pass a no vote despite her strong pro-Israeli feelings..... Most Australians share in her pro-Israeli views, as does for example, Canada who is also casting a NO vote against the Palestinians
