Simple...we make them fit. Determinism and uniformitarianism allow us to do so. Given determinism and uniformitarianism, we simply use numbers to describe quantities, then relate them. The unit "m/s²" describes acceleration, as that is how we define acceleration mathematically. There is no mystery to ponder, there. "9.8 m/s²" describes the acceleration due to the force of Earth's gravity, while "13000 m/s²" does not. Uniformitarianism is a theory. It isn't hard science like mathematics. Otherwise, use uniformitarian thinking to "prove" something. Determinism is a philosophy. You'll have to explain how mathematics and determinism are related.
