Islamist vision of 'sin-free' tourism raises alarm in Egypt

REPORTING FROM CAIRO -- The Egyptian tourism minister has expressed concern about recent comments by members of the country's leading Islamist parties, who have outlined their vision for "sin-free" tourism.

"There are international concerns about some irresponsible comments made by some Islamists about beach tourism in Egypt," Tourism Minister Mounir Fakhri Abdel Nour told the independent satellite channel Mehwar on Monday evening. "Many countries have sent inquiries and asked for explanations, and Egyptian tourism already lost a lot because of these comments."

Abdel Nour was referring to statements by members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and the ultraconservative Salafi party Al Nour. The two parties are leading in parliamentary polls after the first stage of voting last month, raising fears that the country's lucrative tourism industry could be at risk.

About 15 million holiday-makers visited the country last year, contributing $12.5 billion to the economy, Abdel Nour said.

A senior assistant at the ministry said Tuesday that Egypt is expected to earn no more than $9 billion from tourism this year because of a reduced number of visitors, which at one point during the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak was 80% lower than the previous year.

Abdel Nour said Egyptian tourism "is currently facing a double challenge: security and the [religious] fatwas."

On Sunday, the Muslim Brotherhood held an event aimed at allaying fears about tourism should Freedom and Justice win a parliamentary majority. Party candidate Azza Jarf told a crowd gathered across the street from the Giza pyramids that "tourists don't need to drink alcohol when they come to Egypt."

Jarf's comments echoed those of party Secretary-General Saad Katatni, who told tourism officials in August that Egypt is a pious country and that bikinis should not be allowed on public beaches.

Although the more politically pragmatic Brotherhood has often remained subtle about its plans regarding beach tourism in Egypt, Salafis have been more clear that alcohol and mixed beaches should be banned.

Doesn't say much for the progress of Egypt and the negative influence of islime that Egypt was actually a much better place 5000 years ago. Ironically, ancient Egypt was one of the earliest civilizations in history, yet, Egypt, today, is so uncivilized.

Woman beaten by Egyptian soldiers for peaceful protest...
Image of unknown woman beaten by Egypt's military echoes around world
Sunday 18 December 2011 - The arrest and brutal treatment of this young woman reminds us that the revolution is far from over
The woman is young, and slim, and fair. She lies on her back surrounded by four soldiers, two of whom are dragging her by the arms raised above her head. She's unresisting – maybe she's fainted; we can't tell because we can't see her face. She's wearing blue jeans and trainers. But her top half is bare: we can see her torso, her tummy, her blue bra, her bare delicate arms. Surrounding this top half, forming a kind of black halo around it, is the abaya, the robe she was wearing that has been ripped off and that tells us that she was wearing a hijab. Six years ago, when popular protests started to hit the streets of Egypt as Hosni Mubarak's gang worked at rigging the 2005 parliamentary elections, the regime hit back – not just with the traditional Central Security conscripts – but with an innovation: militias of strong, trained, thugs. They beat up men, but they grabbed women, tore their clothes off and beat them, groping them at the same time. The idea was to insinuate that females who took part in street protests wanted to be groped.

Egyptian soldiers beating and dragging a young woman during clashes in Tahrir Square. Her image has become the latest icon of the revolution.

Women developed deterrent techniques: layers of light clothing, no buttons, drawstring pants double-knotted – and carried right on protesting. Many of the smaller civil initiatives that grew into the protest movement: "We See You", "Against Corruption", "The Streets are Ours" were women-led. But, a symbiotic relationship springs up between behaviours. Mubarak and Omar Suleiman turn Egypt into the US's favourite location for the torture of "terror suspects" and torture becomes endemic in police stations. The regime's thugs molest women as a form of political bullying – and harassment of women in the streets rises to epidemic levels. Until 25 January. The Revolution happened and with it came the Age of Chivalry. One of the most noted aspects of behaviour in the streets and squares of the 18 days of the Egyptian Revolution was the total absence of harassment. Women were suddenly free; free to walk alone, to talk to strangers, to cover or uncover, to smoke to laugh to cry to sleep. And the job of every single male present was to facilitate, to protect, to help. The Ethics of the Square, we called it.

Now our revolution is in an endgame struggle with the old regime and the military. The young woman is part of this. Since Friday the military has openly engaged with civilian protesters in the heart of the capital. The protesters have been peacefully conducting a sit-in in Ministries' Street to signal their rejection of the military's appointment of Kamal Ganzouri as prime minister. Ganzouri announced that no violence would be used to break up the Cabinet Office sit-in. Moments later the military took on the protesters. For a week Military Police and paratroopers had kidnapped activists from the streets, driven them off in unmarked vehicles, interrogated them and beaten them. On Friday they kidnapped Aboudi – one of the "Ultras" of the Ahli Football Club. They gave him back with his face so beaten and burned that you couldn't see features – and started the street war that's been raging round Ministries' Street for the last three days.

for those that have not realized it yet, 'Egypt' is not the 5-6 blocks surrounding the Embassies and first class Motels in Cairo or Alexandria. Our state dept. and Obama missed that memo apparently. 80% of Egypt is just a step up from fellaheen.

The huge votes for both Islamic parties should have surprised no one.

Salam Alaikum......

You have a point, alot of Westerners have these romantic notions of Egyptians when they think of the Pyraminds and the Ancient Egyptian culture that was there thousands of years ago. However, the people that currently live in Egypt are not the same people that built those beautiful monuments, I have met many Egyptians when I was in the Middle East and the majority of them for the most part are very conservative, backwards and look to Islam for guidance in every aspect of their daily life whether it be personal, business, private etc etc the majority of Egyptians want an Islamic state under strict Muslim guidance, this is what they want and it was foolish of anyone to think that Egypt would turn into Las Vegas or Amsterdam once Mubarak stepped down.

Isn't there a sphinx in Vegas? Go there. Food's better, too, and female clitoral mutilation is illegal

Egypt is over rated, for the most part it is a third world shit hole, besides the Pyramids and Sphinx what else is there? cheap hashish? no fucking thank you, I'll take Vegas over Egypt anyday of the week, nobody is going to go to Egypt anymore once they start banning alcohol and start covering up the women anyways.

I don't agree. People go to see the history. Egypt was never really known for "partying" anyways.

In any case..this sort of sucks. But most of the third world is very conservative.

Once they ban alcohol and start making women wear burkas like in Iran they can kiss their tourism industry good bye, people aren't exactly lining up to visit countries with strict Islamic rules and guidelines.

Just following the path of allah the merciful...

Quran 4:34 Allah has made men superior to women because men spend their wealth to support them. Therefore, virtuous women are obedient, and they are to guard their unseen parts as Allah has guarded them. As for women whom you fear will rebel, admonish them first, and then send them to a separate bed, and then beat them. But if they are obedi-ent after that, then do nothing further; surely Allah is exalted and great!

The ancient Egyptians, well before the advent of islam, deserve props for their industriousness in establishing one of the earliest civilizations in history and using their ingenuity to utilize the nile for innovative agricultural projects and for building the sphinx and the pyramids that remain engineering wonders to this day. The pharaoh Amenhotep IV was ahead of his time in flirting with monotheism. The Golden Age of the New Kingdom of Egypt is in the dustbin of history

I agree with you 100%, the Ancient Egyptians were indeed a glorious culture, not the Egyptians we see now however. The Ancient Egyptians were killed and chased out when the Arabs invaded Egypt, the Egyptians we see now currently living there have nothing to do with the Ancient Egyptian culture, in Sudan the Nuba people are descendants of the Ancient Egyptians and they are currently being slaughtered by the Sudanese regime in Nuba and Kordofan near South Sudan.

The Egyptians need good role models, such as Israel. In ancient times, the Greeks hellenized Egypt and further advanced Egyptian society. Alexandria was named in honor of Alexander the Great whose regime built the great library

Egypt is the example of a country that went backwards in time, not forwards. Plus, I think they will go even more backwards still as the Islamists start to ban alcohol, throw the women in burkas, and place more restrictions on them.

Tru dat. 5000 years ago, the Egyptians figured out how to farm by constructing channels emanating from the great nile river to deliver water and nutrients to crops, facilitating the creation of a civilization and cities. Previously, people were hunters and gatherers.

What have the Egyptians invented, lately?

Arab Author Anwar Malek...
The Arabs are afflicted with fantasies and obsolete bravado. False, empty bravado, which does no good to anybody. The Arabs invented or discovered the zero--but what did they do with it? Some of them sat on it, some put it on their heads, while others wore it around their waists and began shaking their hips, their belies, and their breasts in order to sell to the world the idea that modern Arabs are doing something

Today, the Arabs constitute nothing but thousands of zeros to the left. The Arabs have lost their worth, their humanity, their culture, and everything. There is nothing to suggest that the Arabs can be relied upon to produce anything. This false bravado is deeply rooted in the Arabs to an unimaginable degree. It is so deeply rooted that the Arabs believe they can go to the moon. If you asked your viewers whether the Arabs would be able to reach the moon by 2015, they would say, "Yes, the Arabs will get to the moon" By Allah, the Arabs will not go more than a few hundred kilometers from their doorsteps.

In all honesty, the Arabs are backward and are not fit for civilization at all. I am talking about the Arabs of today who have begun to export shawarma, falafel and lupin beans to Europe and they purport to be bringing something Arab to Europe

the reality of the Arabs is one of defeat, hitting rock bottom We are defeated, politically and militarily and economically, socially, and even psychologically. We have a discourse of conspiracy, and we blame everything on others. Take Egypt--What does Egypt--that superpower--have to offer? Nothing, it is incapable of doing anything. It has nothing but lupin beans. It is incapable of anything.

Look at how the Arabs live in the West. By Allah, they are a bad example. If you hear about thieves, they are always Arabs. Whenever a young man harasses a girl on the streets of London or Paris, he turns out to be an Arab. All the negative moral values are to be found in the Arab individual

Lately the only thing coming out of Egypt are misery, sorrow, depression, and cheap hashish, fuck that place. I met many Egyptians in the Middle East when I was there on deployment and I was not impressed, and I am not surprised that its total choas over there after Mubarak stepped down, Americans and Westerns really have no idea what the Egyptians are really like, they think they are enlightened because the Pyramids are there.
