I was shocked (really!) when I read this article in the March 19, 2018, print issue of Bloomberg Businessweek.

*****

Person A is in prison for a year and a half for shoplifting rice, strawberries, and cold medicine.
Person B is there for two and a half years for shoplifting cod roe, seeds, and a frying pan.
Person C is there for one year, five months for shoplifting energy drinks, coffee, tea, a rice ball, and a mango.

*****

Oh, I forgot to tell you something.

Person A is an 89-year-old woman.
Person B is an 80-year-old woman.
Person C is a 78-year-old woman.

*****

"Almost 1 in 5 women in Japanese prisons is a senior. Their crimes are usually minor -- 9 in 10 senior women who've been convicted were found guilty of shoplifting."
