When I'm around a Christian I listen closely to what they say...especially to other Christians. When passages from the new testament make declarations like:
John 14
6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
and
Luke 16
“There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And IN HELL he lift up his eyes, being in TORMENTS, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and COOL MY TONGUE; for I AM TORMENTED IN THIS FLAME. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art TORMENTED. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of TORMENT. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, IF THEY HEAR NOT MOSES AND THE PROPHETS, NEITHER WILL THEY BE PERSUADED, THOUGH ONE ROSE FROM THE DEAD.”
Then by their mere belief and in the absence of mine they are saying, "Go To Hell!"
I lived in the church for most of my adult life and anyone who fails to see the message in the new testament...just has not read it
After hundreds of millions of hell fire and damnation sermons the church is so intent on doing away with a burning hell that when one does a google search on any of the incriminating scripture, because they have loaded up their web sites with html metafiles, guess what always comes up first...that's right sport's fans...some church explanation that leads one away from what's really in the bible.
Why am I not surprised
For a thousand years the church required infant baptism but when members began to doubt that an infant might be condemned to hell fire...they stopped requiring it. The scripture is still there.
For thousands of years innocent young women were tortured and burned at the stake for accusations of witchcraft. When the members learned that there was no such thing as a witch the church stopped mentioning it. The scripture is still there.
For thousands of years slavery was tolerated and sometimes accomodated by the church but when slaves were freed they stopped mentioning it. The scripture is still there.
Women having any authority in the church was forbidden and submission to men was preached through all history until women won their rights and now some churches actually have women as religious pastors. The scripture is still there.
When any part of the bible begins to offend the members and donations begin to fall off the church methodically deals with the issue by contrary doctrine, denial or placing it on the back burner. C'mon folks...that childhood brainwashing should only take an intelligent, reasonable human being so far.
