The Tigers were mauled by Mauricio Pochettino's Saints side 4-1 at St Mary's Stadium in front of watching Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson.

Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, who earned England call-ups for the upcoming friendlies against Chile and Germany, both got on the scoresheet while Jay Rodriguez also impressed for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Huddlestone and defender Curtis Davies failed to catch Hodgson's eye with disappointing performances for the visitors, and the former Tottenham man admitted they collectively fluffed their lines.

"We got battered in the game," said 26-year-old Huddlestone.

"But I did not regard this as an audition - it was just another Premier League game. But, as a team, we weren't on it.

"It's a shame for Curtis, who has probably been our best player this year, but when you have been playing as well as he has, hopefully you're allowed one off-day."
