Leaders have a vision which is constantly corrected by new discoveries, the have a keen and open mind and are not intimidated by challenges or deterred by doubt.
When a leader speaks, you listen and what you don't hear is his/her effort to gain power and popularity by arousing the emotions, passions and prejudices of the people. You hear reason; problems defined, potential solutons discussed and his/her vision on the best course to set.
Leadership is the ability to clearly communicate a vision for the future. A leader is able to offer not only the vision but an honest assessment of its cost-benefits and potential roadblocks, as well as a critical assessement of its overall impacts. A leader orchestrates the mission so that each follower understands their role and responsibilities. S/he delegates authority to trained lieutenants who consistently provide feedback on milestones reached and assesses any failures, without a need to assign blame, simply to understand, correct and move forward.
