For all the folks out there that use these words interchangeably, they do not mean the same thing.
The deficit is the difference between how much is collected vs how much is spent.
Debt is the accumulated deficit over time.
As an example right now the nations deficit for the year is about 538 billion dollars while the national debt is 21 trillion dollars.
