Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin said victims of sex abuse at the hands of "powerful" men in the IRA were sworn to silence.

"The most powerful men within the IRA interrogated victims of abuse at the hands of leading men in the IRA. That happened," the opposition leader said.

"The most powerful men and the most powerful men conspired, conspired to protect the abusers and swore the victims to silence.

"It’s unpalatable to have to say that. There might be members of the house who might like saying that. But actually there’s no getting away from it."

Members of the IRA call themselves 'freedom-fighters' and not revolutionaries, so we can see intellectual space for people to feel non-bipartisan about this complicated issue.

I see no harm in portraying the sentimentalism associated with this struggle so peace-minded conversations can arise. After all, don't we glorify Depression Era bank robbers in America (i.e., Bonnie and Clyde)? Youngsters should feel less confounded by glaring contradictions between James Bond glorification movies (and themes) and freedom-fighter criminalization propaganda.

Why not imagine that if members of the IRA have been accused of widespread corruption that they are being emotionally troubled by their own sane bureaucracy rituals?
