Nor was it an example of white benevolence towards blacks:

    Featured Document: The Emancipation Proclamation

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

Despite this expansive wording, the Emancipation Proclamation was limited in many ways. It applied only to states that had seceded from the Union, leaving slavery untouched in the loyal border states. It also expressly exempted parts of the Confederacy that had already come under Northern control. Most important, the freedom it promised depended upon Union military victory.

Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in the nation
, it captured the hearts and imagination of millions of Americans and fundamentally transformed the character of the war. After January 1, 1863, every advance of federal troops expanded the domain of freedom. Moreover, the Proclamation announced the acceptance of black men into the Union Army and Navy, enabling the liberated to become liberators. By the end of the war, almost 200,000 black soldiers and sailors had fought for the Union and freedom.

It helps to do some real research some times instead of spewing decades old lies and distortions.

Surely Shogun will try his best to tapdance and spin his way out of this, but the fact remains that the Emancipation Proclamation did not free all slaves, which further backs up the Bass claim that the Civil War wasn't about freeing black slaves as that was not Abraham Lincoln's primary nor secondary goal.

What's your point ? Everybody knows Lincoln didn't give a fuck about slaves. He just wanted more power for himself like every other politician.

What's your point? The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in states in rebellion against the US and was an attempted (and failed) strategic move on Lincoln's part to foment uprising in the South that would pull troops off the front line to guard the homes against such an uprising.

The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution officially abolished slavery in the United States.

The US Civil War was about power and control of the US government. Only a small minority of Northerners actually gave a rat's ass about slaves in the South as anything other than a means to break Southern power.

All this holier-than-thou, "the Civil War was fought free the slaves" is a bunch of revisionist bullshit perpetrated by the winners in an attempt to morally justify their actions.

The point Gunny is that dumb, hypocritical liberals like Shogun feel blacks should be thanking white people for all of their successes because of white benevolence and he cited the Emancipation Proclamation as one such act of "white benevolence." No doubt the 13th Amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude for all men, but for some blacks and white liberals to advance the lie that Abraham Lincoln cared for the slaves and that the Civil War was fought to free slaves is pure intellectual dishonesty and decepation at its best.

The south fought the civil war so they could continue owning slaves.

The north fought the civil war because they didn't want to lose half the country...though there is no doubt many people thought slavery was wrong.

    I wouldn't call it benevolence.
