They'll cross inside what is effectively a digital camera, recreating conditions of the present, just after the beginning of the universe. It’s not even really “matter”. As far as quantum mechanics tells us, the protons are made up of three quarks that are so small they can’t even be measured. Everything we perceive as “matter” is just high amounts of energy in quantum fields.
